Gowther remembers

Year 5, Mottram St Andrew

Why oh why did the gunshots leave their mark, thought Gowther as he lay on the ice-cold operating table. He was waiting for an operation so he could move his right leg. Two painful days later, he knew he would have to go back to the place he dreaded – the army.

“Ready! Run!” yelled the sergeant as Gowther ran through the tall grass. There was a German in hiding, so he was ready for anything. Seconds later he was on the floor in pain, yelling for help. No one came. He took one last breath.

Five days later Gowther was lying in bed. Nobody knows how he survived, but Gowther does…
